Bedroom Tips To Stay Healthy

Posted by Lisa Bowen on Monday, October 7, 2013 Under: Breathing Retraining
As the brisk winds of Fall come, and soon the Winter cold, it's heartwarming to think of the comforts of home and a cozy bedroom.

The affluent lifestyle most people seek includes soft bedding, a thermostat on high and warm clothes.

But Professor Konstantin Buteyko, a 20th-century Ukrainian doctor and researcher who found a correlation between heavier breathing and illness, noted that higher temperatures within a home increase breathing, which can contribute to more frequent colds and flu, asthma, allergies, and even snoring and anxiety.

Another factor is that when we are over-dressed, we are less able to regulate body temperature through the skin. This encourages us to revert to the primitive way of heavier breathing to regulate body temperature.

Buteyko recommended cracking the window at night for ventilation and wearing pajamas made of natural fibers like cotton and wool, under warm bedding.

He also found that dust and dander in the bedroom increase breathing and propensity for illness so as much as you can:
  • Remove wall-to-wall carpeting and live with a bare floor and perhaps some area rugs.
  • Don't let pets in the bedroom.
  • Keep a minimal amount of dust-magnet stuffed animals on the bed and wash them frequently.  Same goes for decorative pillows.

Here's to living cold-free!
