Breathing Well = Relaxation

Posted by Lisa Bowen on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 Under: Emotions and Breathing

Today I came upon a wonderful Albert Einstein quote on how things really work.

Then I thought how that relates to another quote by Dr. Konstantin Buteyko:

"The essence of my method is in decreasing the depth of breathing. You would ask me how. The best way is through relaxation of the muscles that potentiate the breathing action. What then occurs is a sensation of having sufficient air if the breathing is reduced. These are the instructions -- the whole of the method."

So the frequency of Buteyko is really the frequency of relaxation.

This morning I was wondering how I can relax more while getting my 6-year-old daughter ready for school.  She needs a lot of direction and cajoling.  I need to actively help.  Can I do it in a relaxed manner, and might that even relax and help her?

After I dropped her off at school, I noticed my pulse was 20 points higher and my control pause was 10 points lower than usual.  One of the things I love about the Buteyko Breathing Method is that everything is measurable.  I can record my numbers every day and see how I'm doing against my non-stressed-out benchmark!

What other areas can I apply this to - work, dating, my difficult relationship with my mother?

How about you?  In what areas of your life do you need to relax to improve your health?
